Today, credit cards are available for everyone such as the “bad credit card”, which is designed for people with bad credit. This type of card is designed to help people rebuild credit so the FICO score increases. In other words, this type of card helps rescue people from an otherwise bleak situation. In fact, many people look at a credit card for people with bad credit as a training tool so they can learn how to properly handle finances and control spending.
The more common name for bad credit cards is “secured” credit cards, which means the person must first open up a special account with the issuer in which money would be deposited. The money then becomes the available balance on the card. Unfortunately, even though credit card companies and financial institutions want to trust people who have proven to handle money poorly, there is a challenge in doing that. However, using a secured credit card gives the person a chance to start over while not putting the issuer at further risk.
Typically, the amount of money maintained in the account will earn interest, which is paid by the credit card company or financial institution. Of course, this varies from one issuer to another so it is always important to learn the particulars for each issuer. In addition, each issuing company will have a set requirement as to the minimum amount of money to be deposited, as well as how much can be used for purchases. The minimum is usually 50% of the available deposited balance and the most 100%.
Sometimes, bad credit cards are also called debit cards for the reason that they are not actually a standard credit card although they do offer some buying and money withdrawal power. The good news is that bad credit cards are actually easy to find but the key is for each person to find the card that is going to serve them best. When looking at the different options, we suggest five things in particular be considered:
1. Minimum balance needed to open the special account with the issuer
2. Credit spending limit, which again is anywhere from 50% to 100% of the account balance
3. Fees or other card related expenses you would be charged
4. Interest rate that would be applied to the balance in the account
5. Current Credit Card Offers
Obviously, some bad credit cards are better than others are so finding one with low or no fees would be the best choice. In addition, finding an issuing company that provides cards whereby 100% of the deposited amount could be used for purchases would be what you want. Even if you found a credit card company or financial institution that allowed you to use 90% of the balance would be okay.
Although not a perfect solution, bad credit cards do provide benefits. For one thing, bad credit reported to the three credit bureaus could be improved on and while using the secured card, lessons about proper spending are being learned.
