Bad Credit Lending

When you need a car you need a car. Not everyone has the ability to purchase a motor vehicle with cash. If you are someone who has bad credit but needs a car then the encouraging news is that auto loans with bad credit are possible.

Where then do you start if you wish to get a car loan but your credit is not being cooperative? First, you must know what you are dealing with. To put it another way, find out what your credit score is if you don’t know it already. If your credit rating is as low as it could possibly be then you are likely to be declined no matter where you go to apply for a loan. For example if your score is below 600 then it is advisable to spend some time improving your score before you apply for an auto loan with bad credit. Bad credit is one thing but bad credit that is off the charts is quite another! If you need a car right away then see if you can borrow money from a family member instead and buy an older car that can get you from point A to point B in the meantime.

Look for car dealerships that specialize in helping those who have less than perfect credit. Look online, in the newspaper and in your town or city. Look for the words “bad credit financing” or “poor credit financing.” These lenders are likely to be more flexible than a bank or credit union when it comes to a down payment and the terms of the loan.

The unfortunate side of applying for an auto loan with bad credit is that the interest rate you pay will be higher and you will likely to be asked to put down a sizeable down payment. This is because you present a greater risk to the financing company than a person with good to excellent credit does. This is something that most auto dealerships will ask you for right away once they find out that your credit is not good. Be prepared for this and plan ahead to have enough money to put down to satisfy the company you wish to purchase a vehicle from.

Something that can really work in your favor if you have bad credit and need a motor vehicle is to have a cosigner. It is preferable to have a cosigner who has very good credit. What this does is it reduces the risk that the lender is taking on you because someone else has vouched for you. The stronger the person’s credit rating is the more likely you will be approved for the car loan.
